CCM hosts Art of the Piano festival
Art of the Piano, a ground-breaking festival presented by acclaimed pianist Awadagin Pratt, is taking things to an entirely new level in its 2017 season, May 30-June 17 at the University of Cincinnati's College Conservatory of Music. The festival (now in its seventh year) welcomes six of today’s most celebrated concert artists. Sergei Babayan, Stewart Goodyear, Olga Kern, Barry Douglas, Kevin Kenner, and Vladimir Feltsman all take the stage in performance and masterclass. Additionally, Art of the Piano welcomes students from Australia, Belgium, Canada, China, France, Germany, South Korea, Ukraine, and the United States.
Masterclasses are open to the general public, giving you a behind-the-scenes look at the mechanics and art of becoming an artist-pianist, and to hear incredible performances by superstars and rising stars.
Inspired by the generous masterclasses of Franz Liszt, one of the festival’s unique qualities is that the lessons are open. Students will have unlimited access to all teachers. They will also learn by watching their fellow pianists. This is one of the hallmarks of Pratt’s own teaching technique - students in his studio attend one another’s lessons. It’s a legacy handed down from Pratt’s teacher Leon Fleisher, who learned it from his teacher, Artur Schnabel.
"What’s amazing for the students is that they’ll have worked with all these different faculty, each with their own point of view. Some overlap, some contradict, says Art of the Piano artistic director, Awadagin Pratt. "Among the results, in addition to concrete improvements, is the gaining of a particular freedom that’s borne of this vast knowledge. They’ve got all sorts of important, and in some cases life-changing, feedback from our faculty."
