Oktoberfest announces Grand Marshall, outlines Friday opening
Live long and prosper at Oktoberfest Zinzinnati 2013. This year's festival will feature Hollywood star George Takei serving as the Grand Marshall, the Chamber announced Monday morning. Takei famously played Sulu on the original Star Trek TV series and six movies that followed.
Every year, people from across the country and in some cases the world, come to Cincinnati USA to celebrate an Oktoberfest that is second in the world in attendance only to Munich. This year, the festival will be held September 20, 21 and 22 and attendance is expected to be at least 500,000. The event showcases the rich German heritage of Southwest Ohio, as well as tasty samples of German-style music, food and beer.
Additionally the Chamber recently announced that for the first time in Oktoberfest history, the festival will be opening on Friday night the 20th, at 5PM. The Friday opening will be at 85% of what you can enjoy on either Saturday or Sunday, with the main exception being the children's' rides. Hillshire Farm and Samuel Adams were also introduced as Presenting Sponsors at the press conference held at the Chamber's offices.
Additional events will include the Hillshire Farm Running of the Wieners, Gemuetlichkeit (Goodwill) games, The Samuel Adams Stein Hoisting Championship and Hillshire Farm World Brat Eating Championship.
As Grand Marshal, Takei will lead the World's Largest Chicken Dance on Saturday afternoon. He continues to be extremely active and popular decades after the show went to syndication. He claims nearly three-quarters of a million Twitter followers, and has nearly 4.5 million Facebook likes.
Takei will be in town not only for Oktoberfest, but also to lend his distinctive voice as narrator to the Cincinnati Pops performance of The Final Frontier. He will perform there both Friday and Saturday nights as well for a Sunday matinee. For more information, and for tickets, please visit: cincinnatipops.org
