Ubahnfest brings major hip hop names to Cincinnati
On November 15 and 16, Cincinnati's transit center beneath Second Street will transform into EDM mania. For those readers who may not be millennials, EDM stands for electronic dance music - one of the fastest growing music genres in the world, according to a recent Forbes article (and every person under the age of 40). UBS analyst John Janedis noted in the article that the EDM industry is one worth $4.5 billion.
With partners AGAR and Self Diploma, the Chamber announced the Ubahn music festival featuring headliners A-TRAK and Mike Posner. Both single day and two-day passes are now on sale on the festival's website.
"Cincinnati has never seen anything like this. The venue itself is a hidden gem in the city, and will be the perfect home for this new event. When you combine that with two stages featuring seven hours of music each night, and some of the top names of those genres, we are anticipating a huge demand for both days," said Pat Sheeran, Vice-President of the Cincinnati USA Regional Chamber.
About the headliners:
Very few DJs can jump from club sets to high-profile festival performances, to Kanye West's larger-than-life stadium shows with ease. In today's DJ culture, A-TRAK holds a truly unique place. He and partner Nick Catchdubs founded America's most trendsetting new label, Fool's Gold, launching the careers of artists such as Kid Sister and Kid Cudi. In 2004, A-TRAK was hand-picked by Kanye to be his tour DJ.
Somewhere along the line, A-TRAK also became a new-school sartorial icon, collaborating with Nike, New Era, Kidrobot, Zoo York and pretty much every designer worth his salt. Add to that scratching on Common's classic Be, Kanye's Late Registration and Graduation, Kid Cudi's Man On The Moon and Drake's Thank Me Later, and you have a bona fide star. A-TRAK has finally become the man to call to make the kids dance.
"In the decade since he won the 1997 DMC World DJ Championship at a prodigious 15 years of age, A-TRAK has turned the art of turntablism back toward its original party-rocking focus - the dude can scratch and beat-juggle, but he's just as skilled at maintaining momentum and crafting seamless segues." - Pitchfork
The 25-year-old singer, songwriter, and producer has been steeped in music and driven to make it his entire life. He was born and raised in the ethnically and economically diverse Detroit suburb of Southfield, MI, where he grew up listening to his parents' Motown records, and later, hip-hop, rock, and jazz artists. He began playing drums in fourth grade and was making beats on his parents' computer by the time he was 13, an obsession he carried with him through high school, when he began writing melodies and lyrics.
After graduating, Posner enrolled at Duke University in Durham, NC, to study sociology and business. During consecutive summer breaks, he interned at Detroit hip-hop station WHTD and hip-hop indie label Definitive Jux in New York City, where he attempted to peddle his tracks to the major record labels.
Among those tracks was "Cooler Than Me" - a breezy ode to a former crush that Posner recorded in his dorm room using a $200 mic. Two years later, "Cooler Than Me" is a smash success having sold over 1 million copies. It is currently soaring in the Top 5 at Top 40 radio, Top 10 at Rhythm radio and thus far has hit #6 on the Billboard Hot 100 and Digital Songs Chart.
"Music is a way I can make my mark. That's what I think about every day: creating something timeless in a finite amount of time."
