Total Quality Logistics, one of the largest freight brokerage firms in the USA, provides domestic and international freight transportation and logistics services. TQL recently partnered with Apprenti Cincinnati to launch an incumbent worker training program.
Before starting TQL in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1997, CEO Ken Oaks was a produce buyer, working with freight brokerage firms, which connect companies with goods to ship to those that own trucks, railcars, cargo ships and cargo aircraft, daily. His frustration with the lack of service and integrity he saw in the industry drove him to start his own company. Since then, TQL has expanded to become the largest privately held company in Cincinnati and is one of the region’s largest employers with over 5,000 employees.
TQL has always invested in people and technology. These two focuses have been combined to create their new IT apprenticeship program. As a partner of Apprenti Cincinnati since 2019, TQL and Apprenti took their partnership to new heights this week, launching an upskilling cohort for employees. 10 professionals across the organization and the nation are participating in an 11-week bootcamp provided by locally woman-owned MAX Technical Training. These employees range from learning and development professionals to sales assistants and executives.
“This program is a perfect example of multiple partners coming together to help grow our tech talent base in Cincinnati” says Apprenti Cincinnati Director, Christina Misali. “TQL is not only on the cutting edge of innovation in the logistics industry but also within their human capital expertise. Upskilling is ideal to leverage the organizational knowledge these employees possess and provide a group atmosphere to train them on the latest technology languages and modules specific to an organization. It also allows employers to support the local economy by opening up entry level roles to those who are currently unemployed due to COVID-19.”
“Developing our own technology has always been a core focus of TQL,” said Kerry Byrne, President of TQL and Board Member of the Cincinnati USA Regional Chamber of Commerce. “Our new IT Apprenticeship program allows us to teach existing employees an entirely new set of skills, giving them opportunities to advance their career with TQL — all while getting paid.”
Apprenti Cincinnati was able to leverage grant funding from the State of Ohio to support the program costs. This registered apprenticeship program is focused on women, minorities, and veterans. The inaugural partnership with TQL is 30 percent minority, 30 percent female and 10 percent veteran. For more information on the program, please visit Apprenti Cincinnati.
